Know about the celebrations of Telugu and Marathi New Year

On this year 2021, Ugadi and Gudi Padwa falls on April 13. Ugadi is celebrated by the majority people of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka. Gudi Padwa is celebrated most widely in Maharashtra and Goa. These festivals marks the celebration of the birth of new year. Now, let us know in brief about the celebrations of these festivals.

Ugadi Celebration:

Happy Ugadi Celebration

Ugadi festival or Yugadi festival is celebrated as the new year by people of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. 'Uga/ Yuga' means 'age' and 'Adi' means 'the beginning'. Hence, 'Ugadi' marks the beginning of the new year. This year, Ugadi festival falls on 13April 2021.


On this day, people joyfully welcomes the new year with many more celebrations. They clean and decorate their homes. They hung mango leaves on the door. People also prepare special dish named 'Ugadi Pachadi' with raw mango, neem leaves, jaggery, pepper powder, salt and coconut. They wear new clothes and also offer Ugadi Pachadi to relatives and friends to share their happiness.


People offer their prayers to the God at home or they visit the temple for worshipping the God. It is believed by them that Lord Brahma started to create the universe on this day. People joyfully celebrate the beginning day of the year expecting that the whole year will be joyful.


Gudi Padwa Celebration:

Gudi Padwa Celebration

Gudi Padwa is the spring festival celebrated to mark the beginning of the Marathi new year. On this day, people decorate their homes and put colourful rangolis with colours and flowers. They hung mango leaves on the doors. They celebrate the day joyfully with dance, prayers, celebrations and festive foods.


They prepare special dish with the leaves of the neem, coconut pulp, tamarind and jaggery as the prasad. People worship Lord Brahma on this day and they believe that he created the universe on this day.


Gudi Padwa is celebrated by offering special prayers to the Gudi (Doll). Gudi is made with a long bamboo stick tied with gudi flags. Gudi flag is just a long orange/red cloth. Flower garlands with candy are used to decorate the gudi. At the top of Gudi, a pot made of silver/copper/bronze is kept upside down. This Gudi resembles prosperity and wellness. The Gudi is placed at/near the entrance of the house. Special prayers are done for the Gudi (Doll) and people share their wishes with their friends and family to celebrate the Gudi Padwa. This festival is celebrated in some parts of Maharastra and Goa.
