"Kandhanukku Arohara"

Once upon a time, there was three dangerous demons named Surapadman, Tarakasura and Simhamukhan who were interested in destroying peacefulness from the world. These demon brothers created disturbances in the lives of  many common people. They also had the boon that they will be killed only in the hands of the child of Lord Shiva. Since, Lord Shiva has no children, they even disturbed many Gods. So, all the Gods went and reported to trimurtis and requested to save the world. Then, Lord Muruga was born from the powers of Lord Shiva.

After Lord Muruga attained certain age, the Lords approached him to kill these demons. So, Muruga decided to fight against these demons. To approach her son towards victory in the battle, Devi Parvathi gifted weapon named 'Vel' to Muruga. Muruga thanked his mother and went to the battle with Vel to kill the demons.

Shasti Vrata was actually taken for six days. But, among these days, the last sixth day is celebrated as Kandha Shasti festival all over Tamilnadu. On this day, Karthikeya killed the demons Tarakasur, Surapadman and Simhamukhan. He killed these demons on Tiruchendur. So, every year, this day will be famously celebrated by performing the events of Soorasamharam in the Tiruchendur Murugan Temple.

Soorasamharam: 

Soorasamharam ritual is the most important ritual on this day of Kandha Shasti. This ritual is also known as Sooranporu. This ritual is performed grandly in the seashores of tiruchendur temple. Each and every year, Many people arrives to this temple to see this soorasamharam event. 

During this event, Lord Muruga killing the demons will be enacted using the idols. The devotees of Muruga approach him for the battle by chanting the Arohara slogans. Lord Muruga behead the heads of all the demons one by one.

On this day, the victory of Goodness over evil powers is celebrated joyfully. So, let us worship Lord Muruga and he will bless us with victory, knowledge and goodness.
