Story of Skandamata
Once, there lived a demon named Taraka Asura. He did several years of penance towards Lord Brahma and he demanded immortality from all the beings except Lord Shiva's son. After losing his first wife, Lord Shiva was in the deep meditation and he was away from all the worldly affairs.
Taraka asura used this situation and worried all the worlds. Devi Parvathi was in the severe penance for more than thousands of years towards Lord Shiva. But, Shiva did not notice it as he was in the deep meditation.
Only Shiva's son can destroy Taraka asura and all the gods wanted to destroy the demon. So, they went to Kamadevan and pleaded him to disturb Shiva's meditation and to create affection in Shiva's heart towards Parvathi Devi.
Kamadevan accepted the request of the gods and went to Shiva and disturbed his penance. In anger, Shiva opened his third eye and balls of fire emerged out from his third eye. After opening the eye, he realised Devi Parvathi's penance towards him.
Due to the spells of Kamadevan, Shiva had realised that Parvathi was the incarnation of Sati and he fell in love with Parvathi. Love along with fire had burnt Kamadevan into ashes and it became six balls of fire which are the seeds of creation. These six seeds (fire balls) fell in the place named "Saravanapoigai." After some days, the six seeds turned to the six little children.
The six krittika sisters raised these six children and hence Lord Skanda is called as Karthikeyan. Lord Skandamatha hugged her six children and they became a single child with six heads and hence Lord Karthikeyan is also called as Lord Shunmuga or Arumuga (which represents his six faces).
Praising Skandamata will provide everyone with prosperity and power. By worshipping this form of goddess, one can get the blessings of Lord Skandamata and the infant Skanda who is sitting on her lap.
