Story of Vijayadasami

Once there lived a demon named Mahishasura. Mahisha means Buffalo and he got this name because he was born for a female buffalo and a human asura. So, he had the ability to transform his appearance from buffalo to human.

He dreamt to rule the whole world and he also wanted to escape from the death. So, he prayed Brahma and followed several years of serious penance towards him. Brahma was pleased with his severe devotional penance and offered him the chance to ask for boon.

First, Mahisha wished immortality as boon. But, Brahma refused to offer his boon. He told him that the creature born on this earth should leave this earth one day. So, Mahishasura thought of asking for a boon which is equal to immortality. He thought that none of the woman has the strength to fight against him. So, he demanded that, he can never be killed by any of the men or animal. He also added that, he should be killed only by a woman.

Brahma agreed and offered him with the boon he wished. Mahishasura misused his boon and started disturbing and destroying all the creatures of the world. He also attacked Devalok and Indralok and tried to capture it. So, the gods fought with him. But, because of his boon, everyone was unable to defeat him.

So, devas thought of soughting help from Trimurtis. Then, They went to the Trimurtis and approached them to destroy the demon Mahishasura. So, the Trimurtis combined their energies and gave birth for a beautiful woman named Durga. She is known as the incarnation of Adishakthi Matha. It is also believed that the goddess Durga was formed due to the combination of Tridevis (Parvathi, Lakshmi and Saraswathi).

Lord shiva offered Durga with Trishul (Trident) and Snake. Vishnu offered Chakra to her. Brahma offered a lotus to her. Indradeva gifted her with Vajrayudha, Varunadeva gifted her with Conch (shangu). Agnideva gave her a spear. Vayudeva gifted her a bow and Suryadeva offered her with arrow. Vishwakarma presented her an axe and all the gods showered her with their blessings to attain victory in the war.

According to Vamanapurana, after offering durga with all the powers, she was born in the house of Shakti devi's devotee Katyayan. Then, she got the name Katyayani as she was the daughter of Katyayan. Later, Katyayani fought with Mahishasura. She fought with the demon bravely for 15 days and she succeeded him when he was in the form of a Buffalo. He kept transforming his form in all days of the war. But, without giving the chance for changing his form, Devi slayed him by jumping on the back of the Buffalo formed Mahishasura.

This victory over the demon Mahishasura was celebrated as Vijayadasami. By killing this demon, Durga got the name " Mahishasura mardini."

Durga is the goddess who can never be defeated easily and she is the goddess who bring auspiciousness by destroying the evil powers.
