Now, we shall know about the story of Matha Katyayani ЁЯСЗЁЯСЗ

Devi kattayam or Mahishaura mardini

Once upon a time, there lived a demon named Mahishasura. Mahisha means Buffalo. He is the son of a female Buffalo and a human asura. So, he got this name. He had the ability to change  his shape from buffalo to human. Once, he was in a serious penance towards Lord Brahma. After many years, Brahma accepted his penance and granted him with a wish. He wished that he can never be killed by anyone except woman. Brahma accepted and granted him the boon.

Due to this boon, Mahishasura started to disturb the beings of all the worlds. He also tried to attack Indralok. All the Gods requested Devi Parvathi to destroy the worrying demon Mahishasura. So, Parvathi took birth in the earth as Katyayani Matha.

There lived a sage named Katyayan. He was a great devotee of Goddess Parvathi. He worshipped her daily with a determined heart and he wished Parvathi that she should take birth as his daughter. To fulfill his desire,  he performed severe penance towards Parvathi.

Parvathi devi was pleased with her devotee's penance and she took birth in Katyayan's house as his daughter. Since, she was born in Katyayan's house, this form of goddess is called as Katyayani. Trimurtis blessed this avatar of Parvathi with special powers.

Katyayani is seen with 4 or 10 or 18 hands. Her vehicle is a lion. She holds weapons in her hands and she is the sixth form of Navadurga. The sixth day of Navarathri is dedicated to this form of goddess. She is the goddess who removes the ignorance and shows us the path for a bright life.

Mahishasura had two demon messengers and their names were Chanda and Munda. Once, these messengers saw Devi Katyayani's beauty and they reported it to Mahishasura. They induced him to marry Katyayani.

So, Mahishasura approached Katyayani and revealed his wish to marry her. But, Katyayani Matha made a condition to accept his marriage proposal. Only if he wins her in the battle against him, she will marry him. The demon agreed to her condition and the battle started between them.

They battled for many days. Mahishasura fought with her in such a way that he changed his form into another form if devi cuts his head. After cutting his many heads, he changed his forms and continued to fight against her.

Days went by and at the fifteenth day, devi planned to kill him without giving him the chance to change his form. So, suddenly, she jumped on his back and killed him by cutting his head with her trident (trishul) when he was in the form of the buffalo.

By killing this demon, she was also known by the name, "Mahishasura mardini." She saved the world from the darkness by killing the asura. This is the story of Katyayani Matha and let us praise her and she will give us the power to come out of ignorance.
